Who We Are

The Shrinking Violets are a group of dynamic young women in the greater Spokane area who decided to create a “social co-op”. This means that all participants are striving towards greater health, happiness and awareness in their lives and contribute to the group in ways they find socially and personally fulfilling. This can mean hosting gatherings, sharing talents, and volunteering to assist with group coordination. Through these interactions we hope to create new outlets for self-expression, and build an authentic response to the many challenges we see around us.

The Shrinking Violets are growing quickly. We espouse no particular ideology, and there are no requirements for membership other than participation and mutual respect. Our goal is to form an informal yet powerful social network made up of friends and friends yet to be.

Diamond in the Basalt is the official online forum of the Shrinking Violet Society. While blog authors are all Shrinking Violets, the general public is welcome and encouraged to comment.

The name Diamond in the Basalt (DitB for short) reflects that there is a lot of undiscovered treasure in the people of Eastern Washington. The Shrinking Violets want to explore, discover, celebrate, and nurture all that the Inland Northwest has to offer. We want to become active tellers of our own stories, stewards of our environment, and productive members of our larger community.
